People In space

People in Space is a series that explores the relationship between individuals and the spaces where they feel most comfortable. For this project, Ellis Bairstow took a unique approach to portraiture, focusing not just on capturing people's physical presence but also on the intimate connection they have with the spaces they inhabit.

When approaching each subject, Ellis engaged in a conversation with them about where they felt most at ease, what they were doing in that space, and why it made them feel comfortable. This dialogue was essential in shaping the project, as it allowed the subjects to reflect on the spaces they had made their own and why those environments were significant to them. The resulting portraits are not just images of people in places—they are thoughtful representations of individuals in environments that resonate with their personal identity and sense of comfort.

Ellis encouraged his subjects to choose any scenario, guided either by the activity they were engaged in or the location itself, which added a layer of individuality to each portrait. This allowed for a diverse range of responses, from private, quiet moments to more dynamic, activity-based settings.

In addition to the series of intimate portraits, Ellis also produced a short video that accompanies the project. This video was first screened in the Reid Lecture Theatre and later shown at the 'WIP' (Work in Progress) exhibition. Notably, Ellis chose not to publish the video online, opting instead to exhibit it exclusively in physical spaces, either independently or alongside the images. This decision emphasizes the personal and intimate nature of the work, reinforcing the connection between the subjects, their spaces, and the viewer in a more controlled and intentional setting.
